Confidentiality in counselling

Condifentiality in counsellingConfidentiality in counselling is an important part of the way it was designed. I will not speak about you, or what you have talked about, to anyone else.

There are limits on the confidentiality that counsellors offer. These are:

  • If you tell me you are going to harm yourself or harm someone else.
  • If you tell me you are going to commit a criminal act.

If you disclose any of these, we will discuss how we are going to respond. We may, for example, agree that you will pass on this information to a named person who needs to know for safeguarding reasons.

NB. Counsellors are required to have supervision themselves. This is part of the counselling profession’s ethical framework.
